There’s something very special about a sheepskin rug. If ever you go into a room with a sheepskin on the floor, you probably have an irresistible temptation to go and touch it – to run your fingers through it, or take off your shoes and feel its warmth between your toes. Sheepskin rugs are sensual. They’re warm and inviting and they’re natural. These days, they’re also extremely stylish, too.
If you remember a sheepskin rug from your childhood, and most of us do, you are probably thinking about a small, cosy rug in front of the fireplace. That’s still a favourite place for many people to put their rug, but it’s a long way from being the only possibility. A large rug looks great as the centrepiece of a room – either on top of a carpeted floor or adding a warmth and texture to wood or stone. You don’t have to put your sheepskin rug on the floor, either. Imagine snuggling down into a sheepskin thrown over a sofa or a chair, or curling up on a luxurious sheepskin that’s covering your bed. And if you’ve got the space, a large sheepskin hung on the wall makes a stunning visual statement.
Sheepskin rugs bring texture to a room. They can also bring colour. It’s now possible to buy these natural wool rugs in a whole range of exciting shades. You can go for a brilliant jewel colour like Cerise Crush or Passionate Pink, or choose the subtlety of Vanilla or Biscuit. Whether you favour a minimalist or a traditional style of interior design, or something inbetween, a sheepskin rug will bring a splash of luxury and creativity to your room. So often, it’s the magic ingredient that makes a house feel like a home.
You’ve decided you want to own a sheepskin rug. But which is the right rug for you? First of all, you need to be sure about the quality of the rug you are buying. We’ve been making sheepskin rugs for over two hundred years and all our rugs are finished by hand, worked on by experienced craftsmen using traditional methods, so you can have the confidence that a rug you buy from us is designed for a long, long life.
You can buy a rug made from a single skin, or a rug that is made up of two, three, four, six, eight or even ten skins. A single skin rug measures approximately 63 x 95 cm, while a ten skin rug is a massive 190 x 182 cm. Remember that every sheepskin rug is individual, and these measurements may vary slightly.
When you are choosing the size of your rug, you need to consider how you are going to use it. It’s quite likely that you plan to put it on the floor, but have you considered using a sheepskin rug as a throw? Or as a dramatic wall hanging? Increasingly, interior designers are using sheepskin rugs in unconventional ways to introduce texture into a room. A rug thrown over a sofa or a chair should be big enough to stay in place when you curl up on it. If you are buying a sheepskin rug as a wall hanging, consider whether you want to entirely cover a large area, or whether you want to allow some clear space around it.
If your rug is going to go on the floor, think carefully about where you are going to position it. Do you want it next to your favourite chair, so you can warm your feet in it while you watch television? Or perhaps you want it to sit between two sofas, or in the centre of a group of chairs. Think about how your room works at the moment, and where you will get the maximum benefit from it. Naturally enough, most people choose to put their rug in a place where they can touch it when they’re relaxing, hence the traditional position of the sheepskin rug in front of the hearth, but you can also use sheepskin to create a visual highlight in a large room. You might also like to consider whether one sheepskin rug is enough for you! Two rugs can create symmetry in a room. More can create a sense of unbelievable luxury.
When you are deciding on size, you might also want to consider how you plan to care for your sheepskin rug. All our rugs can be dry-cleaned, but our single and double skin rugs can also be washed in the machine. If your rug is going to get a lot of use, you might find the smaller sizes more convenient.
Now we come to the question of colour. Sheepskin rugs are available in a wide colour range. If you want a natural look, go for a muted colour like Vanilla or Butterscotch. For drama, pick Ivory White or Jet Black or one of the mouth watering jewel colours like Cerise Crush, Lilac Time or Passionate Pink. A small rug in a bright colour makes a big statement. A large rug is even more striking, but make sure you don’t overwhelm the other colours in your room. Or have you considered custom rug design? You can mix your colours within a single rug. Click ‘Design your rug’ on the left hand menu and see where your imagination takes you. We will make up a rug to your specifications.
You can also choose a mosaic rug, made up of squares of the finest sheepskin. These soft rugs are perfect for children’s rooms, providing a comfy place on the floor to play or sit and read a book. The colours in our mosaic rugs are a subtle blend of creams, greys and browns. If this is the colour scheme of your living room, you might find that a mosaic rug would fit well there, too.
Spend some time choosing the sheepskin rug that is right for you. Choose a size and colour that you’re comfortable with, because it will be part of your life for many years to come.
Open any style magazine and you are very likely to see a dash of sheepskin somewhere in the pictures. Interior designers love natural wool because they understand what it can do for a room. They also know how to use it to best effect.
There are so many styles of interior design that you could be forgiven for thinking that there aren’t any rules any more. But that’s not the case. There are some simple principles that apply whether your style is minimalist or traditional. One of these key concepts is emphasis. Every interior space needs a focus. When we go into a room for the first time, we look around it, sensing the mood, taking in the whole space, following the lines of the architecture and the furniture, looking for that special feature where we can rest our eyes. A sheepskin rug can fill this role beautifully.
Texture is another key interior design concept. Some surfaces will be smooth, some may be shiny, others can be matt, richly textured or patterned. We feel slightly uneasy in a room which is all the same texture and interior designers set up rhythms between rough and smooth, warm and cold. Imagine a loft apartment. The walls are white and the floor is tiled. The furniture is smooth leather, with clean lines. Place a large sheepskin rug on the floor and it complements the other textures in the room.
Colour is crucial when you are trying to create a mood and bring the elements of a room together. Light colours give a feeling of space. They seem to retreat from the eye, while stronger colours jump forward, demanding our attention. Unless you are trying to create a particularly dramatic mood, keep most of your walls fairly neutral. You can use stronger colours in your furniture and curtains – and then add a little of a highlight colour. All your colours should relate to each other. You can go for lighter and darker shades within the same colour range, or perhaps mix colours with their complementaries. Take a chocolate brown sheepskin rug. It would look great in a room where the predominant colours were cream and lighter brown. It would also look fantastic against a light blue wall.
Finally, think about scale. Large furniture looks best in a large room. And if your space is small, avoid large patterns on curtains and upholstery. Buy a rug that fits the proportions of your room. If you are attracted by the jewel colours of some of the sheepskin rugs, remember that bright colours really stand out. If you want a large rug, it might be more effective to choose one in a neutral colour, unless your space is very large. If you are looking for a small rug that will set off the other colours in your room, think about choosing a more dramatic shade.
